Thompson has a very important contrarian message to give in our modern time of ever accelerating complexity, and our fetishist belief in technological and social "progress." His writing raises the question to what end are we striving so manically, and is it worth the costs of the destruction of our world and our traditional values to get there? He produces a compelling argument that, at least over a long enough time frame, it is logically inconstant that Bentham/Mill utility can ever be increased (permanently), that essentially the entire modern era our times are in overshoot, massive overshoot, based off the massive fossil fuels used by our society, and while this excess energy has removed the Malthusian starvation constraint (at least temporarily) unconstrained, humanity has mutilated wildly forgetting our time honed traditions and values.I think you would like this book if you enjoyed Matthew Crawfords, Shop Class as Soulcraft or any of Wendell Berry's writing, both other authors talk around the same issues and mixed feelings of the immense wealth of our times coupled with a poverty of our time's soul.

The early champions of classical utilitarianism worked to reform society so that the sum of human pleasure minus pain would increase over time. The central claim of this book is that efforts to achieve this kind of progress are doomed to fail: total pleasure minus pain must approach zero in the long run.The book’s argument for this claim can be summarized as follows. Population growth tends to be exponential in time, while resource growth tends to be at most cubic. If these tendencies are not checked, then the result is a struggle for survival in which evolutionary fitness must average to one across individuals over the long run. This selection pressure applies to tendencies to feel pleasure and pain, so that in the long run those tendencies will match the tendencies of various types of actions to promote evolutionary fitness. As a result, pleasure and pain summed over individuals summed over individuals must exactly balance in the long run.One way to escape from this long-run hedonic equilibrium is to depress population growth. Many humanitarian organizations promote birth control as the most palatable means of controlling population growth because they understand that exponential population growth inevitably leads to suffering. However, attempts to depress population growth face at least two major obstacles. First, they will only succeed in the long run if every society complies. If a given religious sect refuses, for instance, then that sect will grow exponentially while the rest is growing sub-exponentially. In the long run, the result will be that the entire society grows exponentially. If that problem overcome, then a second problem arises: in the absence of selection pressure, unchecked mutations become a new source of suffering.A second way to escape from hedonic equilibrium is to increase resources along with the population size. However, the laws of physics seem to preclude this option. Once we have exhausted the resources in a given volume of space, the only way to increase them is to travel in search of more resources. However, there is a fixed cap on how rapidly we can travel through the three dimensions of space, namely the cube of the speed of light. As a result, in the long run our resources cannot grow faster than cubically in time. Moreover, even if we could somehow overcome this problem--perhaps through some combination of automated space mining and suspended animation--the result would be again an absence of selection pressure and thus accumulation of harmful mutations. This argument is strong, elegant, and important. In the age of fossil fuels, we have become accustomed to resource growth keeping pace with population growth. Our humanitarian efforts are largely aimed at maintaining this pattern by replacing fossil fuels with renewable and non-polluting energy sources and by controlling population growth through birth control. If the argument of this book is correct, then those efforts cannot keep the party going indefinitely. We must eventually face some combination of selection pressure and genetic decay through mutation. My main hesitation about the book's argument is that I remain unsure about how strong the problem of genetic decay is and whether it suffices to ensure that total pleasure minus pain must approach zero in the long run, but it may be that my lack of clarity on this point is my fault rather than the author's.This book advocates responding to this problem by giving up global humanitarian ambitions, accepting that life involves struggle, and living a life of compassion within one’s local community. However, there may be another option. Perhaps we can continue to escape from selection pressure through some combination of birth control, renewable energy, and space exploration. We will then have to address the problem of genetic decay through genetic engineering. Our current science and technology are woefully inadequate for this task, but they will improve over time. If the argument of this book is correct, then this approach may be the only way in which progressive humanitarians can achieve their aims over the long run.

Samuel Thomsen's Progress Debunked, as the title states, takes careful aim at the notion of progress with the goal of re-zeroing the sights of philosophy in modernity, and I have to say he hits the mark dead-on. His argument against progress is well targeted and constructed with the care of a writer and philosopher that is publishing to communicate an important piece of wisdom and not merely to pad a curriculum vitae. The argument is suitably intricate, technical and well-cited when appropriate, while remaining completely intelligible to a philosophical layman, like myself. For the more academic or technically minded among us, the appendices are deeper waters in which to wade.

I am a college adjunct faculty English teacher and I wanted a simple edition with notes for my class to read in the fall. I was going to order 20 of these for the class, but I am so glad I first bought one for myself. The paper edition doesn't have any spaces between the speakers, either, so it is difficult to read, even if it were written in language my students, mostly college freshmen, could easily understand. They would give up on this edition. Also, there are absolutely NO NOTES for students that define and explain some of the more obscure vocabulary and written expressions. The text underneath this edition on Amazon did NOT say that there were no notes. It is not helpful AT ALL for a new reader of Shakespeare or a reader who only read it in high school unwillingly. I am going to order something else for my class.

As noted by other reviewers, this edition provides but a fraction of what it promises. There are no annotations, no photographs — a historical impossibility of monumental absurdity — of the author, nor any of the other promised features. Beyond that, it does not even include a dramatis personnae, a hallowed standard for any dramatic work. Even the ratings provided by Kindle were for other Shakespeare plays. ... Is there no quality control for works published by Kindle? This was such a sham that it makes me very leery about future purchases from Kindle, especially for editions with which I am not familiar.

This is probably the worst book I've ever received. Characters are not marked. There is no formatting. It is just a wall of text. Don't buy this. Get a different copy of this play.

As an English teacher, teaching Shakespeare can be quite a challenge. For modern students, trying to connect the concepts, theme, and setting of Romeo and Juliet can be quite a challenge. Keeping them engaged in the struggle of Shakespearean language is even more so. This version of the play is accurate and most importantly, entertaining. We, as a class, will read a portion of the play and then I will show this film to help cement ideas, dialogue, and characters. The students love the film, laugh, and respond better to the play than without!

When I saw Romeo & Juliet in the theatre -- on its opening weekend -- after the film in the lobby I saw dozens of teenaged girls sobbing in each other's arms. I've never seen anything like that before or since. That alone marks the film as a masterpiece, and nothing any critic can say is relevant next to that emotional reaction. Those sobbing teenagers are absolute proof that any critic who panned this film is a fool.Di'Caprio wasn't very famous at that point (though I believe he'd already been nominated for an oscar for an indy film). Later that night, I had dinner with friends and predicted that this boy would become the biggest star in Hollywood -- by tomorrow! I was off by a couple of years. Rare in film history has there been such a perfect casting -- Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo. The mythical balcony scene is freshly designed and executed wonderfully, bringing the myth to life before our eyes. But the crowning glory and superpower of this film is the 'love at first sight' scene - ironic in that there are no words spoken (words being Shakespeare's superpower). It's all done with the eyes by the two young genius actors, combined with inspired camera work and the devastating vocal performance of Des'ree. This is one of the most beautiful, greatest, and most powerful scenes in cinematic history. What is this emotion -- love at first sight? It might only happen two or three times in our entire lives. It isn't real love. So is it just trivial, adolescent silliness? I think it is much more than that -- and so did Shakespeare. What is our emotional relationship with our desires that can never be? We're haunted forever by the impossiblity of perfect love as much as we were ever thrilled by the fantasy of it. Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo & Juliet' taps deeply into the impossible longings that never leave us. It is a masterpiece.

I did not want to see this movie for years after its release. I consider myself a purist where the Bard of Avon is concerned. I adored the films Henry V & Much Ado About Nothing, both directed and starring Kenneth Branaugh, Richard III starring and directed by Olivier. Period costumes, true to Shakespeare's lines, etc. I began to change when I realized (fairly early on in watching it) that 10 Things I Hate About You, was a delightful retelling of The Taming Of The Shrew. Eventually I watched this and found a gem. From the factions portrayed as rival gangs, to the outstanding delivery of the lines. The true crowning jewel is the over the top performance by the inimitable John Leguizamo. As Tibalt, John is amazing.

I have just begun my journey into psychology, and I found this book to be an excellent place to start. I liked how each topic was well covered and each opinion or statement of fact was well supported. The relationship between psychology and the Bible was handled with respect and thoughtful insight. I believe this book will enhance the education of both Christian and non Christian.

I purchased this book because it was required for one of my classes, but I was pleasantly surprised with how good it is. Much easier to read and understand than my other psychology textbooks. This book is a keeper.

Served the purpose for the class.

Review

Martin Sheen "In this wonderful book Father Codd brilliantly captures for us the essence of pilgrimage. He is a candid and engaging guide to the physical realities involved — the beauty of nature, the aches and pains of weariness, and other pilgrims along the way. More than that, though, he reveals the interior journey, equally difficult and equally rewarding. It is a spiritual and emotional trek on which pilgrims are confronted with their own broken humanity and come face to face with the God they seek."Tom Korologos — Former U.S. Ambassador to Belgium "Father Kevin Codd's fascinating, thirty-five-day pilgrimage comes to life, step by physical and mental step, in this remarkable book about his 500-mile adventure-filled trek to fulfill a dream. I found myself joining, indeed even pulling for, this limping American pilgrim Catholic priest telling about his challenges and triumphs of body and spirit. I even got sympathy blisters on my feet as I joined him on the twisted road to Santiago. Written in the tradition of a Hemingway. Bravo, Father Codd!"Commonweal “Both a pilgrimage journal and a priest’s wonderfully unsentimental meditation on faith.”  Worship “The fascinating story of the thirty-five days and nights spent traversing the camino. . . .Beautifully written.”  Spirit & Life “To say that this book is a delightful experience is putting it far too mildly. It is rather a high spiritual adventure as one travels day by day, mile by mile to the famous Spanish shrine of St. James, along with the author and many of the pilgrims he meets and loves along the way. . . . May this inspirational book find a wide readership and bring its message of love and faith to a world sorely in need.”  The Pilgrim (Belgium) “To the Field of Stars has become a travelogue that disarms by its lack of pretense, and enthralls by its sincerity. “

Without a doubt, one of the best Camino books I have read since I've begun my literary pilgrimage a year ago. Kevin A. Codd invites us to walk along with him on the 1,000-year-old pilgrimage that is the Camino de Santiago, more specifically, the Camino Frances route which begins its 500-mile trek from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port at the foot of the Pyrenees in southeastern France and stretches across northwestern Spain to Santiago de Compostela. What I loved most about this travelogue was Codd's personal reflection from the beginning of his journey to its epiphany. We revel in his joys, we shed tears in his sorrows, we agonize in his aches and pains, but most of all, we celebrate the camaraderie he shared with his fellow peregrinos, the special bonds he created with each of them along the way. Eventually, his Camino family of seven make their way to the Field of Stars and we rejoice with all of them as they walk into the Plaza del Obradoiro, the Cathedral of Santiago's main square. If you're planning a pilgrimage of your own someday, or walk the way vicariously as I have done recently, then this book is a must-read addition to your literary Camino collection!Bravo Kevin and Buen Camino!

I'm looking forward to my first camino next year and have bought a few books to help me get a better idea of the experience. I enjoyed reading this one that contains a very personal account of a Catholic priest's own camino 15 years ago. I enjoyed his candor, his humor and his at times self deprecating assessment of personal feelings he had during his 35 days, both positive and negative. Surprisingly, he is very quick to judge in a negative way many that he meets along his travels, be they uninspired priests giving mass, an elderly gentleman who doesn't focus on the pain but rather the joy of the experience, those who have their backpacks shipped from town to town rather than carry them, etc). As one might expect there are a few passages that are "preaching" but on the whole it is a very balanced account of a well meaning and caring, spiritual man and his personal experiences and relationships that are developed along "THE WAY". He also doesn't advertise his vocation to his fellow travellers unless specifically asked to allow him to hear people's personal views of religion and his in particular. As an American he encounters a fair amount of pushback based on American foreign policy at the time and his personal views of the Palestinian/Israeli situation. It is well written with a short chapter on each stage of his journey. I was surprised with his apparent lack of preparation from his equipment (examples include not properly training ahead of time, the weight of his pack, he is oblivious to the challenges and time needed to do the "Napoleon Way", how to treat blisters, proper rain gear/ponchos, etc.) and this is a lesson to those of us still planning a pilgrimage. He also correctly emphasizes the pilgrimage aspect of this walk, rather than it being a race or just a bucket list item. I'm glad I read it but don't know if I learned very much from it.

Anticipating my first Camino coming up in a few months, I am anxious to read the experiences of others - hence the choice of this book. While it hints at the sense of physical places along the Way, it is not imaginatively written and it was tedious in the way it tried to flesh out the story. I found myself scanning more of teh text than really reading it. Maybe this is because I read a lot and depend on the beauty of imagery crafted by an author to carry me into the heart off the story, that I was disappointed in this recounting of the author's events. Many of the notions of the author were recounted, but they were self-reflective at the initial level and for me they needed to be re-worked to give them a more transcendent or universal sense of what he was feeling.

What an extraordinary book this is. It is a story of humanity, of an amazing pilgrimage, the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, and it is a grace, a blessing that leads us at the end to Field of Stars where we are drawn to consider so many aspects of our own day-to-day caminos. It is Kevin's story, but it is our story, it is your story if you will allow it. As another reviewer has exclaimed, "I LOVE THIS BOOK!" This is the only book I have ever IMMEDIATELY started to re-read upon finishing the last page! I just did not want to leave the world within this book. I think when you are in it's pages, you are as near to being on the camino as you possibly can be without actually being there. But, in the end, it's not only about the walking. No, my friend, it's much, much more. Do yourself a HUGE favor and BUY THIS BOOK. Even in you have no present intention of walking the camino yourself, you will love this book. Buen camino, everyone!

We are in the midst of the most important predicament in the history of mankind, and there are few who are chronicling it as well as Mr. Jamail. If you want to know the latest on the science of climate disruption, there are many qualified sources. If you want to know what the changes feel like, and how they are manifesting themselves, you only have a very few choices, Mr. Jamail being far and away the best of them.Anthropomorphic climate disruption has already displaced tens of thousands of people all over the world, including thousands of Americans in Louisiana, California, the Carolinas, and Texas. Still there are those who would deny that anything out of the ordinary is happening, although recent events are making denial harder then ever. I have followed Mr. Jamail’s work for years, and anxiously awaited this volume. It doesn’t disappoint. We are losing our world, but as “End of Ice” makes clear, it isn’t all about us. Unfortunately, we’re taking millions of species along with us. Estimates on how much longer we might survive vary from only a few years to several decades, but it looks as though the endgame is already baked into the climate systems. This was a hard book to read, from the standpoint of the emotions it awakens. At times I found myself only able to read a few pages at a time before having to set it down for a while. The writing is quite compelling, invoking powerful images of various climate catastrophes-in-motion.“End of Ice” doesn’t overtly try to convince anyone of anything, instead it’s an engaging “war journal,” who’s only purpose is to enlighten. I would recommend the work most highly to anyone searching for an expert journalists account of where we stand, and what’s happening currently with the climate on our only planet.

Proclaiming that the end is nigh has now become the labor of the very opposite of a deluded religious devotee. And the question framed by Robert Frost of whether the world will end in fire or ice is no longer in dispute. The world will soon end in fire, possibly the fire of the Pentagon’s “usable” nuclear weapons, certainly the fire of anthropogenic climate collapse. Not only will the world not end in ice, but the vanishing of ice from the earth is helping to rapidly render this planet uninhabitable for humans and many other species. As we observe up-close in Dahr Jamail’s new book The End of Ice: Bearing Witness and Finding Meaning in the Path of Climate Disruption, great masses of ice are melting away. Glacier National Park will soon lack any glaciers. Greenland, that ice-covered land falsely labeled green and distorted by northern prejudice to appear larger than Africa on most western maps, is being transformed into something you can spray through a hose . . . or drown in. Ice that most of us have never seen, but upon which our lives depend, is disappearing, not just quickly, but at a rate that is constantly becoming quicker, and even quicker, and quicker still. The permafrost in the Arctic, Jamail tells us, is thawing and releasing methane, and could at any moment release methane equivalent to several times the total carbon dioxide released by humans ever. Barring that catastrophe, the feedback loops or vicious cycles are real and underestimated. When the glaciers melt, the streams warm up or dry up, ecosystems collapse, forests burn, and the glaciers melt more. By 2015, forests in California had become climate polluters rather than CO2 reducers. Jamail finds that every single worst case scenario predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) regarding temperature, sea level, severe weather, and CO2 in the atmosphere has fallen short. In fact, Jamail explains why the IPCC is generally not just excessively conservative but 10 years out of date. That figure places the IPCC’s late-2018 report claiming that humanity had 12 years left in which to change its ways and avert disaster in a harsh light. While that IPCC report came out after Jamail wrote The End of Ice, it can add little perspective to a book that looks at our state of affairs far more clearly. Yet the fact that I am writing this review months before the book and this review will be published strikes me as somewhat obscene. What’s a quarter of a year, anyway, to wait to publish a silly book review? Well it’s an eighth of the 2 years one might conclude we have left to work with. But that would be clinging to fantasy. There is no preventing utter disaster. Yet there is urgency. The need is to work to slow the collapse and to mitigate its impacts and provide aid to each other as it washes over us.The End of Ice takes us on a tour of magnificent and critically wounded areas of the earth, beginning in Alaska on Denali, which is changing — melting — dramatically. In many of the locations that Jamail takes us to, people have observed the warming for decades. Many people in the “developed” world, Jamail suggests, have not been connected enough to a place to notice — at least until now, when it is too late.As Jamail travels the planet, he meets with top scientists, local officials, and other observers of what’s happening. One makes the point about Alaska being out-of-sight and out-of mind: “If this was happening in California, every one of these changes would be front-page news. That is why you’ve had no idea that Alaska’s glaciers are losing an estimated 75 billion tons of ice every year.”Of course, that’s a very partial explanation of denialism, which has, by definition, consisted of denying something, not of being unaware of it. The news has been unwanted, especially by those paid not to want it. While Sarah Palin could see Russia from Alaska, there was no evidence that she saw Alaska from Alaska. In South Florida, which is doomed to go underwater, insurance rates are skyrocketing, the lengths of mortgages are shrinking, and construction — including of nuclear reactors — is booming. A grave for humanity might bear the word “Ignorance” or it might, just as appropriately, display an image of Ronald Reagan ripping solar panels off the White House roof. Those living in some fortunate untouched inland suburb will not have the benefit of a lengthy warning in the form of direct impact. They can only warn themselves by caring what’s happening in other places ravaged by drought and flooding and storms and heat. Rather than sitting in the mythical warming pot alongside the poor slandered frog who actually knows better, people are on the comfortable stovetop next to the pot, about to be engulfed as the pot boils over.Jamail finds his visits to natural wonders bittersweet and takes extra pleasure in spending time with doomed places. But I don’t think he intends to encourage morbid tourism. When he visits the Matanuska Glacier, he finds privatized profiteering from visits to the glacier’s receding edge. As the glacier melts, chainsaws take down trees, construction noise echoes, and ATVs buzz about — knowingly turning up the heat that such last-chance tourism industries fully feel.Millions of humans depend on glaciers for drinking water. The countries where over half of humanity lives are over-pumping their aquifers. The rising sea levels accelerated by the melting ice will render a significant portion of humanity homeless. I fear that, beyond the physical feedback loops that scientists tell Jamail about, human feedback loops could worsen the coming crises. If people respond with greed, fear, bigotry, corruption, and violence, they will make matters far worse immediately, and by further fueling the climate collapse. Building walls to keep out refugees, and promoting the idea that climate disaster produces war (all by itself, without any human involvement, it would seem from many such predictions) is a recipe for catastrophe, possibly of the nuclear sort. What to do is not the focus of The End of Ice, but some ideas come through, beyond that of enjoying what time we have. First, I think, we must cease adding to the methane and CO2. As war is the biggest producer of C02 around, making plans to use war as a response to climate collapse is one of the dumber moves available. As the meat industry is one of the greatest producers of methane around, enjoying some delicious end-of-times cooked flesh is not the solution. We need a radical reworking of our culture into the sort of society that could have survived had it reformed itself 30 years sooner. Then we need to mitigate the damage, by helping those in need. We need to relocate people and other species out of areas that are going underwater, and not just people but the worst of their physical creations as measured by the degree to which they will poison the oceans if left behind. As long as there is some hope of reducing the speed or enormity of the damage, I will find an exclusive focus on mitigation to be an outrage. But even more outrageous is the fact that right now our society isn’t even trying to mitigate the damage.I’ve never shared the widespread interest in hope or despair. We have a moral responsibility to do what needs doing. What more has to be said? But the work of the doctor / narrator in Albert Camus’ The Plague, which I’ve referred people to as a model is not quite right — or at least could be misleading. The importance of preparing for the plague at the first signs of it must be increased dramatically. And one cannot simply plod along, working long hours, until the plague has run its course. This plague ends us before it runs its course. We have to dedicate ourselves to ending with dignity and kindness, with the closest thing we can manage to the grace and wisdom that could have saved us. And then we have to rededicate ourselves to redoubling our efforts, again and again, with ever greater effort as we continue. The alternative of giving up is guaranteed not to be more enjoyable than working well together on a crisis that could bring out the best in us. The alternative of pretending everything is normal, scorning radical activism, and contenting ourselves with voting in yet another “most important election of our lifetime” every two years is guaranteed to create a crisis of faith and a crisis of guilt. Let’s not go there. Or rather, let’s not stay there.

I can not say that I enjoyed reading this book due to the gravity of the subject, which really is about the fate of our world. Having said that, I believe that everyone should be induced somehow to read it thru and give it a good discussion. This should be required reading for all influential people. Mr. Jamail even mentioned that he, "was preaching to the choir" in large portions of this book. I know that I am a lifelong member of that choir, especially after visiting Pt. Barrow back in 1975 and the Mendenhall Glacier outside of Juneau, Alaska. Went back to see the Mendenhall in 1999 only to see that it had retreated nearly one mile upslope!. I have also been fortunate enough to travel down to the Antarctica several time starting in 1974 (US Coast Guard icebreaker) to see the wonderous beauty. Palmer station on the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula was covered in snow and ice back then, now I understand that they can have vegetation growing where the Penguin rookeries used to be (the Penguins are dying off you see due to food disruption). It seems that experiencing climate change for oneself makes you an easy convert to its reality. Trouble is that most people don't go out into the world to experience these conditions for themselves. What can we do about that? One good place to start would be to read this book. And how about getting really out there to experience natures decline for yourselves?

Must read for anyone seriously concerned about climate disruption.

The End of Ice is an honest, yet heart-centered look at anthropogenic climate disruption—the brutal reality we have created for ourselves and all other life on this beautiful planet. It is an invitation to love, to grieve, and to step into Presence. This is the book we need right now.

Thank you, Mr. Jamail, for this book. It is not easy, over and over again, researching and watching the ongoing destruction of these beautiful ecosystems. It is important work albeit painful.

Very informative and scarey. It really brings home the fact we are only taking baby steps to deal with the enormous problem of climate change.

current, informational, well written, I couldn't put it down.

Very cool book, even I learned things. Got it for a 5 yro, he loves it and wants to do all the experiments. Some content is over his head still, but for the most part we were able to read all of it and he really enjoyed it including diagrams that further the explanations. I'd recommend if you have a kid who is really into science and non-fiction, but not for any younger than 5.

I bought this for my six year old son for Christmas. It's a little above his reading level for now, however, it's a well made hardcover book which is a nice change from smaller paperbacks. Also, it's well thought out and to me at least, is pretty interesting!

I gave this book and a companion book (5,000 Awesome Facts (About Everything!) to my friends, 9 and 12 year-old brothers, and love both. Of course, I had to take a peek inside before wrapping the gifts, and I loved them, too. They were a big hit.

Excellent

I GOT THIS BOOK FOR MY GRANDSON. TO BORROW A PHRASE " HIS INQWUIRING MIND WANT TO KNOW" IT WAS A BIG HIT WHEN HE OPENED IT.

Bought this as a Christmas present for my 9 year old. He loves to learn and this book is perfect for that. Can't wait for him to unwrap it.

My 9 year old grandson had his nose in it from the moment he saw it. Wonderful book for a curious mind.

This book is very interesting and useful. My 9-year grandson really enjoyed it
