I am so thankful for this book! We just got our first dog last month and I got this book to cram a ton of know-how in my head before our puppy gets too many bad habits. I love how the chapters are mapped out and how I can quickly find strategies for whatever situation I’m dealing with or fun new things to teach our puppy that I would have never thought of! We have had fun watching our puppy discover an ice cube, play soda bottle soccer, and learn simple commands. Anything I want to know has step by step directions in numbered format so I can learn easily. Of course, this book covers all the important things like choosing a dog, potty training, feeding, health and hygiene. If you have a new puppy, this book is a great tool!
I just got a puppy when I bought this book so needless to say I read quickly. A lot of great information. Only 11 weeks old and she's got "sit" and "drop it" down and she's about 80% potty trained!
I bought this to prepare for my new puppy since it had been a number of years since I had a dog. The book was very informative, a quick read and had a lot of good suggestions. She walks through a lot of different options for things like collars, leashes, housetraining methods, even if she doesn't necessarily agree with those methods she still lays out all the options. She walks through how to teach tricks and commands clearly. I feel so much more prepared to bring my new puppy home after reading this. Again it was a very quick read and will be easy to go back and reference if I need to.
This is my go-to book for raising puppies, which is why I bought it for my son when he got his first dog. I read it cover to cover before we got our now 11 year old dog and it provided fantastic lessons for training him. He is one of the best behaved dogs I've ever owned. I think anyone who has a puppy or is thinking of getting one should read this!

There is so much information in this book it can be a bit overwhelming. There are good resources and practical suggestions that really make a difference, and help you understand things from the puppy's perspective.

After consulting five professional trainers, a friend told us about this book and we've been on a good road ever since. We have a Golden Doodle that has much more energy than we do and is so smart that it's scary! The information in this book kept our heads above the situation and we now have a maturing and reasonably well behaved Doodle. He's getting there at just 10 months old and it's because of this book.
