Review

"This practical handbook uses acronyms to introduce mindful techniques. Biegel, a psychotherapist, begins with PAWS ("pay attention with senses"), which emphasizes using the five senses to maintain awareness. Next, she introduces "self-CARE" ("compassion, acceptance, respect, esteem"), urging readers to find joy through hobbies, music, "down time," and gratitude. Finally, Biegel includes strategies for communicating purposefully and meaningfully, explored through the acronym of ACORN ("always considering other responses now"). Mindfulness, Biegel suggests, is not a series of steps to follow but a constellation of tactics for finding clarity and security, even amid overwhelming circumstances. By avoiding a prescriptive tone, Biegel offers an intuitive resource for readers seeking to gain greater control over their emotions and perceptions." --Publishers Weekly"Without talking down to anyone, Biegel identifies simple actions that young people can take for self-care, easing anxiety, and cultivating more ease. This book will help in the vital work of empowering teens to improve their own wellness."--MindfulÂ

Useful for personal use and with students

This lovely book has 50 bite-sized, real life mindfulness practices that you can begin to do today. The book is divided into three sections: mindfulness practices, self-care practices, and practices for choosing responses (rather than reacting) to life and its stress. This is a wonderful book for anyone beginning a mindfulness practice, for teenagers, or for parents and teachers. For us, it's a great family resource for everyone to talk about mindfulness and together do one practice a day and have a family discussion about it. As a matter of fact, my teenager asked me if I needed to take a mindful pause - and she was right! I did. Written simply, directly, with "mindful takeaways" at the end of each practice, makes this is a very practical way to remember how and what to practice in an already busy and full schedule.

Completely helpful! Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House for the opportunity to read and review Be Mindful & Stress Less by Gina M. Bigel! The fifty ways to deal with your crazy life are broken down into parts. Pay attention with senses is part one, part two is self-care, part three is always consider other responses, and each of these focuses on how to handle stress, learning to be mindful of our surroundings and stress triggers and self-care. My favorite stress relief is to “just breathe”! So relaxing. Taking mindful pauses to keep stress in check and to become more aware of our responses to problems is a wonderful tip also. The 5 G’s, gratitude exercises to help express and experience gratitude, and encouragement to treat yourself with kindness are resourceful and beneficial advice sections. Wonderful book for dealing with life’s inevitable stresses, 5 stars!* I received a complimentary copy of this book for voluntary review consideration and all opinions and thoughts are my own.

I checked this out from the library because I'm teaching yoga to teens. I really like the information in it, but it's hard to read the book in one sitting. I suggest taking a chapter a day or a chapter a week to work through the 50 tips. I also think some illustrations would make it more appealing to teens and young adults. The information in it is very good, but it's also a bit small. I think a larger book that's thinner would have made it an easier read, too.

Biegel's work is extremely accessible, and although her professional focus is on teens, I found the advice just as relevant to adults. One of the reasons that I found this book so accessible is its attractive cover and layout which includes "mindful takeaways" at the end of each chapter. Each chapter is short which gives the reader time to digest the content at his/her own pace. The short chapters also allow the reader to make use of the practical advice given. The book is broken down into three parts: 1) PAWS - pay attention with senses; 2) Self-CARE - self-compassion, self-acceptance, self-respect, self-esteem; and 3) ACORN - Always consider other responses now. This division makes it easy to go back and reference tactics and ideas that make sense when life becomes stressful. As someone who does not read a lot of self-help books, but is always looking for ways to stress less, I actually enjoyed creating my own toolbox of practices that can help me get through tough work days and other stressful situations. If you consider yourself a skeptic of this genre, I would recommend picking this up and giving it a try - there's something in here for everyone. This book was received for free through #GoodreadsGiveaway.

So smart and foolproof. Like a guide to be a normal human being! I loved it!

I must first begin my review by saying that I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.I initially asked for this book because mindfulness and self care are topics I am interested in. As a high school teacher, mom of two, and a blogger, I am always busy and looking for ways to make my life more efficient and fulfilling. I hoped this book would provide me with some advice to make that possible. While Gina Biegel did provide interesting, helpful tips, I found it challenging to remember them all as I read. I think this may have been due to a lack of specific concrete examples. Throughout the book she included many metaphors and hypothetical moments to illustrate her tips, but none of them felt concrete enough for me to fully relate to her advice.Overall, I think this book has good information for a reader, and I would just recommend that a reader tackle maybe one chapter of her fifty a day or week in order to really allow the information to sink in and be the most helpful.

Ms. Biegel's experience and research is evident. A relevant tool for all to use on a daily basis, taking the time to absorb each of the 50 ways to deal with the obstacles thrown our way navigating life. A great tool for parents to gain insight in how they manuver their days, and in turn offer guidance for their children/teens. I'd highly recommend her book, perfect size to carry around in a briefcase, backpack, diaper bag, carry-on...Or even lay it on a kitchen table and read as a family, discussing over dinner. I've seen her workbook's for teens, and again, valuable tools to add to our 'life box."
