At a college reunion years ago the question was posed, "what are some of your goals yet to do?" Among items I listed was to read Edward Gibbons' "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire". Well, I did get as far as chapter thirty seven of volume one. Had I known then, however, of Hourly History's "Ancient Rome" I would not have gotten that far. There would not have been a need to do so. One might expect that any historical work covering the expanse of 1200 years would require a major investment of time. On the contrary, one can receive detailed, dependable information about a foundation block of Western Civilization in this work I highly recommend it for persons:who want a quick overview of characters, places and events of Ancient Rome , who want to fill in information blanks of sites that they may have visited or might wish to do so in the future. I have been fortunate to have made travels that were within the bounds of the Roman Empire. An interesting newly learned fact was that Emperor Titus' sack of the Second Jewish Temple in Jerusalem helped to finance the building of the Collesseum. From Shakespeare we have an easy familiarity with suspected dictator, Julius Caesar, and the lovers Antony and Cleopatra. How satisfying it is, then, to join with them the tales of a "dark unrelenting Tiberius, a furious Caligula, a profligate cruel Nero, a beastly Vitellius, a timid Domitian" all of whom are condemned to everlasting infamy? Your bucket list might include Gibbon's, "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire"..In much less time you can read this Hourly History of Ancient Rome. Veni, Vidi, Vince.
The book was a concise history of Ancient Rome. It provides an exceptional, straight forward account of the major events that occured during the near 1500 years existence of Rome and its influnce on Western Civilization. Rome was founded In legend in 753 BCE, by twin brothers Romulus and Remus. The Republic of Rome was founded in 509 BCE and during its 500 year existence conquered most of tthe known world. The republic died with Juleus Caesar's assination in 44 BCE, giving way to the power and grandure of the Roman Empire. The empire held dominum over the ancient world for another 500 years. The Roman Empire is alleged to have fallen in 476 CE. The legacy of ancient Rome continues to live on today. This book was professionally researched from numerous primary and secondary sources, written, and published by Hourly History. This publishing house has produced an extensive collection of thoroughly researched, concise, informative, and well written historical texts purposfully designed to be read in one to two hours. This historical collection is focused on chronicaling the lives of important historical persons, key events, nations, and peoples. I have read a number of their offerings and found each volume well written, researched, informative and presented with an unbiased perspective. The Roman legacy to the western world is evident nearly everywhere you care to look. The arts, architecture, languages, philosophy, laws, govermental structure, and even amenities of daily life such as running water, indoor plumbing, roads, structure construction techniques, and city design. Roman influnce is particularly evident in the United States (US). The US is a republic modeled by its founders after Rome, and stands today as the formost world power. Is it possible that Rome’s legacy for what lies ahead for the US is linked to not only the glory, but also the decline and fall of that ancient republic. This book was well researched and written. It was a joy to read. I appreciated that the material was presented in a easily digestible and well written manner. The narrative was engaging and enjoyable. The text described the history of Rome and its influnce on the modern world in a remarkably clear and understandable manner. Readers who enjoy history and biographies, or those who are interested in knowing more about Ancient Rome will enjoy this book.
One of the great free items on the internet are the scholarly but easy to read Hourly History books. Every Friday, if you subscribe as I do, we are sent about four free history books, such as this one about ancient Rome. I think that everyone should know about Rome, not only because its history is fascinating and stories about parts of the history appears on TV and it is good to have a wide background to what is being presented, but there is much in our culture today, in America and Europe, especially in our laws, that is taken from ancient Rome. In fact, when I went to law school – I am a lawyer – I was advised to take a course that compares Roman and American law, and I did so. It gave me a more in depth understanding of American law. This book tells us much about ancient Rome. We read about Rome’s legendary beginnings, a fascinating fictitious tale, how the country was ruled by the Senate and later by Caesars, some somewhat good and many terrible, the Roman empire, how for a long time Rome ruled the world, Rome’s impact upon Judaism and Christianity, why and how Rome fell, and Rome’s legacy today. It is a good book to get, even if you pay for it.
Good quick read telling the history of ancient Rome from the believed beginning to its downfall. Many contributions to society from the Romans, from the form of government to their engineering feats.
It is well written quick overview of the beginning to the end of Rome. Almost like Cliff notes but an enjoyable read.I learned more in the hour it took me to read this book than I ever learned in my 70+ years studying world history.Highly recommend this book to get you started on this subject as some books take 30+ chapters to cover what this book summarises in a few pages.
I would not consider this a book. It’s so small and thin. Can’t believe it’s $13! Bought it for my mother in law for her birthday as she just went to Rome and is interested in the history. But once I received it and realized it isn’t really a book, I returned it. Waste of money.
