Once upon a time, a beautiful, yet harried, mother of 3 found a book on Kindle Unlimited. It was about a 8 year-old boy named Owen Kiskaddon, who liked to make intricate designs with tiles, and his evil king. This twist on Richard III's tale immediately intrigued the woman, who promptly downloaded every book in the series. She fell in love with Owen, with Elysabeth Victoria Mortimer, and the mysterious magical land of Ceredigion.The mother travelled with Owen and his friends through many journeys, laughing and crying as the story called for her to do, until the story seemingly came to a happy ending in The King's Traitor. She was content to let the story go, but Mr. Wheeler wasn't. Trolling Facebook one day, the mother happened upon a notification from Mr. Wheeler that he had, indeed, written another tale. Convinced that it could not possibly be as good as the original stories, the mother asked for an advance copy. She patiently finished the book that she was reading then proceeded to read The Hollow Crown... and promptly began ignoring her children and thirsting for the next installment.The Hollow Crown is a clever and skillful weaving of the War of the Roses with Arthurian legend with the added thread of St. Joan's story. Honestly, it's a beautiful tale. Ceredigion reminds me of Narnia, and I just want to go there, let my mind rest, and follow the words of the Fountain. I wasn't so fond of The Maid's War, but The Hollow Crown wiped that all away. I see why Mr. Wheeler needed to write that tale down. It's an integral part of the overall story, in spite of being a stand-alone novel. The Hollow Crown is an achievement. I'm very much looking forward to the rest of the series. Outstanding work, Mr. Wheeler!I received an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
I don't know why, but sometimes I tend to put off reading books that I know are PG rated. I get it into my head that they won't excite me or hold my interest like something grittier would. And then I pick up one of Jeff Wheeler's books and I remember why I keep buying Jeff Wheeler's books. Because his characters are flawed but they persevere; because there is drama without melodrama; because he deftly includes gut-wrenching events without resorting to Tarantino-like gore and language. Yes, he writes clean and wholesome stories, but they are heart-pounding, tear-jerking, I-gotta-read-more stories that never leave me sorry that I picked up the book.If you're looking for something for your children to read, the Kingfountain series would be great for ages 8 and up. Younger children might enjoy it as well, although I would suggest that you read it to younger children, as there may be subtleties or elements they won't pick up on without an adult to explain. Your tweens and teens will enjoy the series as well, and so will you.
Well he's gone and done it again! Taking me out of this realm of reality and swept me away on to another time and place which is wonderful in my book. Jeff Wheeler just has a knack for the finest storytelling of a complete other world with kings and lords and ladies and palaces. Let's not forget the magic, intrigue and courtly behavior. This story revolves around Trynne a daughter of Owen from one of the earlier books, and she is coming into her own and she is meant to become a Wizr like her mom, but, she is a lot like her dad. But there is more to it as well remember Magic! If you're going to read this I do recommend that you read the previous 3 because a lot of things tie in to this story and you may not get who or what the characters are speaking of. I highly recommend this for anyone of any age. Thanks go to Jeff Wheeler for sharing your heart and soul with us on this journey, I anxiously await the next one.
"I wrote in my note at the end of The King's Traitor that I thought the children of these main characters needed a turn on the stage."I was both excited and hesitant when I found out the Kingfountain series had another installment. It is exceptionally hard (or perhaps I'm just exceptionally picky?) to pull off a series that picks up a generation later, shifting the focus to the children of the characters you love while still maintaining the integrity of the original characters in the recent iteration. Too often I find they turn into paper parents - two dimensional characters I no longer know that are just...there.But boy howdy, was I ever pleasantly surprised that Jeff Wheeler pulled it off and pulled it off well. While The Hollow Crown is considered the fourth book of the Kingfountain series, I consider this book to be the first in a connected trilogy.The Hollow Crown opens up to introduce Trynne (Owen's daughter) and Fallon (Elyse's son). They've been raised fairly close despite being part of different households because of their parent's friendship. The way they pick on each other instantly reminds me of the saying about adolescent boys, "If he's picking on you it means he likes you."(I'd be lying if I didn't say this made me a little giddy because while I obviously wasn't able to have Owen+Elyse, maybe I could have that with their children. But I'm getting off track.)Trynne embodies everything I love about strong female leads. She's suffocating under the yoke of her mother's expectations to become a Wizr. Being a good daughter, she truly tries...but her heart lies not in studying books and magic but in battle and strategy. Despite the pressures she faces both by familial duties and societal expectations, she relentlessly pursues her dreams.Her dreams become reality when she secretly becomes an Oath Maiden, sworn to serve the Fountain and protect the king. As the threat of an impending invasion sets tensions on edge, the dance between King Drew, Queen Geniveve, Owen, Sinia, Trynne, Fallon, Morwenna, Elwis, and other players (both known and unknown) will keep you riveted to your seat and begging for more.Note: while the ending doesn't have a cliffhanger, certain events will make you unable to stop once you've finished. You will be compelled to immediately pick up The Silent Shield to continue.
