My 10-year-old loved this book because the main character learned that it is not great to be alone (her words). She received a bunch of books for her birthday - this is the one she has been carrying with her to school and various activities for the past month, so I would say it is a hit.
Purchased for my daughter and she read it in a day. She says she loved it and would like more!
Great graphic novel, very well done and really popular in my classroom!
After months of walking past this book on one of the shelves at my job, I finally bought it. Honestly was hesitant about spending $12.99 on a graphic novel but I think it’s worth it! It’s a surprisingly thick book, with nice medium weight fully colored, glossy pages. If you’ve ever read any Emily the Strange books then you’ll definitely like this GN and the main character Suee! She’s very much like Emily, minus the genius inventor part and the fact that she’s Korean. One of the reasons I was so interested in it. If you also have an interest in Korean culture or would like to read a story based in Korea than this is a good one for you.Just one of the downsides I guess, and this is only if you have a attention span as short as mine and get bored just as easily, it’s a bit slow in terms of story progression. I’m not at all saying that I wish it was shorter, because I don’t! It had decent pacing, I just felt certain parts got a bit repetitive. All in all, very much worth it. I’d recommend it to anyone of any age. I’m in my 20s
"I've heard of losers, geeks, nerds, and everything else, but 'zero' is a new one." I felt the same as Suee when I opened this extraordinary book. This new idea of "zeros" that Ginger Ly brings into the book adds an exciting new idea on having no personality. My favorite character is Suee, the main character, because in the beginning of the book she is the new girl. On her first day at her new school she is drawn into the old exhibit room. Then, from the shadows of the exhibit room, Suee hears a voice call out to her. All of a sudden, people around Suee start becoming "zeros!" Is this her fault or is the thing in the exhibit room now on the loose and won't stop until everyone is a "zero"?Suee helps figure out what this "zero" business is all about. Her friends, Haeun and Hyunwoo, help her discover what is happening around her and what makes a zero a zero. They also figure out the cause for these problems. Is this Suee or is this one of her friends that is turning the whole school into mindless zombies?I recommend this book for ages 9-12 because it isn't really a complicated book. I just think a nine-year-old may understand the meaning of the book a little better. All together this book is a memorable read.Giovanna P., 11, Connecticut/Western Massachusetts Mensa
The artwork and styling of Suee and the Shadow is somewhat reminiscent of Marjane Satrapi and the graphic novel rendition of Coraline. The illustrations and coloring decisions convey the emotions and atmosphere of the story. This was a fascinating and original concept that had elements of suspense and mystery, and there is some interesting symbolism at work here too. Suffice it to say, beyond the title, that the central character has to deal with a striking supernatural event. As a reader, I enjoyed the way Ginger Ly set up this graphic novel, and it kept me interested to see what would happen by the end (which is not something I can say about all books).I would recommend this graphic novel for the library or classroom bookshelf of any teacher. The text and images would appeal to a wide variety of readers, old and young. I would also happily add this graphic novel to my personal collection.
I bought this from Scholastic Book Club and I came to Amazon to see if it was a series, because my 12 year old daughter LOVES this book. She doesn't want to put the book down. I don't understand how the reviewers gave it such poor reviews, it's a book and it's a kid's book at that. She loves the way the pages are in a comic way, and not written regular books.I was actually surprise about the lack of reviews. I was expecting 100s maybe 1,000 of reviews. This is that type of book.
Suee is a twelve-year-old goth girl-in-training; she dresses in black, has no friends, and seeks to keep it that way even after starting at a new school. A trip to an off-limits room in the school, however, leaves Suee hearing voices - and, eventually, seeing her shadow, which has not only come to life but seems to have truly sinister plans for both Suee and her classmates; perhaps even the entire school! This graphic novel for middle-graders is surprisingly dark and sinister, with a Tim Burton-like tone in the artwork and story, and though said story draws you in, for me I found things stretched out a bit, to the point where at times I found myself checking how many pages I had left to read before The End. That said, Suee is a sympathetic character with a couple lessons to learn whom readers will readily identify with, and for that reason alone is worth the read. A good, if not great, graphic novel with (at least in the ARC I was reading) mostly black-and-white artwork occasionally dappled with color. 3.5/5 starsNote: I received a free ARC of this title via NetGalley and the publisher, in exchange for an honest review.
