About the Author
Ed is a popular presenter at math, homeschool and gifted education conferences around the country and has approached gifted education as a parent, teacher, and school board member. His students will testify to his ability to make math fun and challenging for them as well as his unique sense of humor which comes through in his classes and workshops. Ed has taught students of all ages and abilities since graduating from Oberlin College in 1974. He holds an Iowa teaching certificate with K-12 endorsement in Gifted Education and a Masters degree in Gifted Education from the University of Northern Iowa. Wish to give it a zero star if possible. The author lacks some basic understanding on mathematics. The problems are easy in math, but convoluted by non-math concepts. Lots of unnecessary unit conversions and raw computations. Is it for kindergarteners? No offense. But framing some basic acceleration problem into a calculus one seems like the outrageous. Such a waste of time!
Excellent book hands down. There are so many problems with application, this book is more than enough to score 800 out of 800 in SAT math. Each topic is nicely divided into easy, moderate, and Einstein sections to segregate problems based on complexity levels. I would highly recommend this book to any parent that has kid(s) in upper Elementary School to High School. One of the best purchases I ever made, no doubt!
This is one of the best challenge math resources for a sixth grade classroom. There is an abundance of rich problem solving along with small tutorials and practice problems for each math strand (algebra, probability, geometry, etc.). The problems are leveled by difficulty. I use these for group problem solves, and a teacher will find that students can approach problems from multiple problem-solving strategies. The only reason it doesn't have 5 stars is that the answer key in the back (which also includes explanation) is a bit clunky to navigate.
Excellent for our needs - a bright 4th grader ready to go further than school curriculum, but doesn't know everything already. Each section begins with clear explanation of a mathematical concept, leavened with commentary from a pair of non-intimidating cartoon characters. Then a brief instructional section clearly presents one or two useful strategies with examples worked out. At the end of the chapter are multiple sets of problems: Level 1, Level 2, and "Einstein" problems. Since they are not marked by grade level, you're not limited by expectations-- you just go as far as you are ready to go. Next year, we will cycle back through and tackle more of the harder problems. I worked through several sections with my son this summer and we both really got into it. Thanks!
I use this book for my 4th/5th grade students who need to dive deeper into a concept we are doing in class. It is a fantastic resource for regular classroom educators who want to ensure that their students are working to continually grow even if they are already beyond proficient.
I bought this book to help my 9yr old prepare for the SCAT. I really like this book, we have all learned something from it. And all the categories it goes over. It is a fun and interesting book. I have already been telling everyone about it. Anyone can get something out of this book.
